New Year, New Faces – an update from the President

Welcome to the 2018 local football season. Below is an update from the President on the year ahead.

Senior Recruits: Keep an eye out for some new faces and some very promising juniors this year. New faces include Josh Eddy & Jake Williamson (St Mary’s), Shane Murdoch (Thomson), Ben Johnson, Rob Cordon-McKinley, Thomas Hooper & Fergus Ellis (Melbourne Ammo’s), Cam Kos, Joe Vellalonga & Tevan Nofi (Leopold), Ash Bryant (Mount Gambier), Stephen Phillips (Ararat), Nick Taylor (Goondiwindi), Gabby Deller (Richmond) Brooke Lowe (Modewarre), Alex Brown (Melbourne) & Amy Callaz (Knox)

New Sports Precinct: This was officially opened on March 17th and we have played several practice matches there.  The new lights get turned on next week and we are feeling very grateful as a club to have this facility available to us.  Senior games will still be played at Mortimer oval.

Thursday Nights: The Hawks bistro and our traditional family-friendly Thursday night gathering kicks off at 6pm tomorrow night. Whether you’re a member or not, young or old, a regular or a first-timer this is the place to be in Drysdale, and a big crowd will be in this week with the Members Draw Jackpot sitting at $1,400. We offer a full a la carte menu, will announce the teams, introduce new players, have memberships, merch’ and raffles available and have the AFL footy on our 3 TV’s.

Social Memberships & Sponsorship: Our social memberships start at just $50 (60+) and a social family membership is only $140.  Sponsorship packages start at just $700 for the season – Please keep an eye out for the sponsor certificates and 2018 Hawks sticker on display in our Sponsors premises from mid-April – reward them with your custom, show them your member card and let them know you’re a fellow Hawk.

Juniors & Auskick: There are some changes to Junior age-groups this season.  Numbers are looking strong and we will soon start grading rounds. Interestingly female participation at the club based on registrations to date is above 15% and illustrates the changing face of our great game. Auskick is being refreshed by the AFL this season, for us that means an exciting shift for Auskick to Friday nights under lights at Mortimer Oval.

Marquee Games: This year we will host several themed games that you might like to put in your diary: 25/4 ANZAC Day v Portarlington, 2/6 Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round v Newcomb, 16/6 Big Freeze Fight MND Round v Modewarre, 14/7 Rivalry Round v Geelong “Amateur”. Watch the Facebook site for more information on these.

Social Functions: Some great events already planned to include 7/4 Past Players Day, 12/5 Life Members Day, 2/6 Drysdale Club Ball, 16/6 Family & Community Day, 23/6 Bogan Bingo, 28/7 Sponsors Day, 10/8 Annual Golf Day

Volunteer: Sporting clubs are a great place to come together as a community. Research shows that communities with vibrant and thriving sporting clubs are better places to live, and that every $ and hour invested in local sport returns over 4-times the investment in community value. Beyond the benefits of playing, they are also great places to join in, get involved, participate, learn new skills, add to your CV, make new friends and basically make a contribution to your local community.  We are blessed with over 100 active volunteers at our club.  Many hands make work fun and are always looking to welcome more to the Hawks team. Let someone know how you can help, what you’re good at or would like to learn – I love it and you will too.

Hopefully this update has been of value. Let me know if you have any questions about the season ahead – I look forward to seeing you at the footy.
