DFC Junior Newsletter – April 2015

Grading nears its end

DFC U16 Bennett 2015The season is well under way with the last of four grading games to be played this week.  The grading period always throws up some one-sided results, and this year has been no exception.  After this week the teams will all be in a division suited to their ability and closer games are to be expected.  All of our teams within age groups will be graded in different divisions, with the exception of our Under 12’s, where two equal teams will play in the one division.  In previous years the Under 10’s have also played in the same division however this year, with the decoupling of the U10 & U12 fixtures (see below), the coaches have elected to pick one team stronger than the other to play in a higher division.

Decoupling of U10 and U12 Fixtures

This year AFL Barwon has decided to treat the U10 and U12 fixtures separately.  Previously they used to try to have a clubs U12’s follow the U10’s to accommodate parents with young children in each age group. The release from AFL Barwon was as follows:

Please be advised that there will be a change to the way that the Under 10’s and 12’s will be fixtured and managed for season 2015. In previous seasons, under 10’s and 12’s with the same colour/name would play at the same location as each other with the fixture based on results of the under 12 competition. Unfortunately this has been to the detriment of the Under 10 competition leading to an average result margin of over 40 points in Under 10’s over previous years. For season 2015, the Under 10’s and 12’s will be managed individually and therefore the same colour/name will not necessarily play at the same venue / day as each other. The change is designed to provide more even games for the Under 10’s and ensure that they are enjoying their footballing experience. I will endeavour to fixture the same colour/name for home games but this may not always be possible.  Although this will be discussed at the Junior Coordinator Meeting, the under 10 and 12’s fixture will be completed in 2 instalments after the initial grading. The first will be after round 4 and the second after round 8.

Great News – a second Under 16 side.

DFC U16 Byrne 2015We are excited that we have now attracted enough U16 players to register a second team which will likely play in Div 4, and they played their first game at Inverleigh last Sunday.  Equally as exciting is the fact that they are being coached by former senior coach Ian Cockerell. This is a fantastic outcome and is due to a great deal of behind the scenes work by Adrian Viccars and Glenn Kilpatrick.  We would still like a few more boys to register in this age group and now that they are assured of a game every week, in a division suited to them, we hope a to see some new faces at training.

Hoodies & Playing Jumpers

DFC hoodies 2015Most players should by now have received the free club hoodie that came with their membership.  If you have not picked yours up yet then please speak to your coach or team manager to get it as we would like to see as many kids as possible wear them on game day.  It is a great site when the teams congregate outside the rooms on arrival all proudly wearing their club colors.  We have also now received the 4 replacement sets of jumpers ordered weeks ago.  We hope that with regular fundraising we will be able to purchase at least 3 sets every year which should mean turning over a team set every 3 years….but we need your help.

DFC BBQ u16 AprilAs we said this is important if we are to continue replacing playing jumpers and providing club hoodies etc.  On the Saturday before last we had our monthly BBQ at Aldi, set up by the ever busy Mark Murone with the assistance of a few parents from.  Then last Friday night and Sunday morning we ran BBQ’s at junior home games, the Friday feast prepared mainly by the boys from our Under 16 Bennett side!  Later this season we also hope to run a function aimed at bringing junior parents together socially….watch this space for details.

auskick logoOur club is once again running the Auskick program this year under the guidance of new co-ordinator Graeme Reid.  They have had a great start to the season with a group of kids playing a grid game at Simmonds Stadium during the Cats V Freemantle game, and this week will feature in the filming of a new NAB Auskick campaign with Joel Selwood.  At this stage we plan to conduct the sessions at the Drysdale Primary School oval on Sunday mornings, with a few Friday nights sessions as well. To register your Auskicker see the news feature on our home page.

facebook logoAs you can see we are trying to lift the level of communication with junior players and members this year.  One of the ways we are doing this is by the use of a club Facebook page specifically for the Junior Division.  This page is used to pass on information in between these monthly newsletters and puts you in instant contact with the junior co-ordinator and subcommittee.  To join the page just click on the following link.  Drysdale Juniors FB  We have also set up a Facebook page for each junior team – search for yours and request to join to keep up with your team’s activities.

You can of course also ‘Like’ the broader club’s page as well at Drysdale FB.

Please be aware that social media needs to be used responsibly and there is a Cyber Safety policy under the Governance tab above.  Also, we ask that members do not create pages purporting to represent our club or a team without the prior approval to do so from the committee.
