The players have so far had a very hectic pre season with plenty of variety being included into training. Including strength and conditioning work, boxing, cycling and the odd triathlon thrown in on the Portarlington foreshore. The triathlon has provided some challenging moments for the players especially those who struggle in the swim leg and those who do not quite have the right sort of bike for their build and this exercise. It has highlighted some players who are very adapt at the triathlon with Paul Davis and Josh Inglis excelling themselves with a whole host of players not far behind including the coach.

This year we will see some familiar faces back playing, including Adrian “Boomer” Hildebrand, Sean Lucas returns after having a year off and also a previous under 18 B&F winner in Daniel Johnson is returning after being forced to have a year off due to injury. Ryan Gatgens is also progressing well in is rehabilitation from a serious knee injury and we look forward to seeing Gatters back out on the ground sometime in the early part of the season.

A number of the U18’s have come up to begin senior training this year including Lachie Patten, Steve Benstead, Danny McGill and Mitch Harman and also Michael Woods has returned after doing some pre season training with the Geelong Falcons. We still have Joel Trezise training with the Falcons – Good luck to Joel !

A couple of new players that will join the Hawks Nest this year will be Jake Dowsett who is 19 from Leopold and plays off a half back flank, he is very mobile and an excellent kick. As well as Adrian Robinson who will be joining us, Adrian is a very experienced Bellarine player and has come across from Newcomb this year and will provide a lot of experience and knowledge to our younger team.

The practice matches are almost complete with some detail still to be arranged

Sunday March 4th – Intra Club (Simonds Stadium ex Skilled Stadium)
Saturday 17th March – Monbulk, Venue TBC
Saturday 24th March – Details TBC @ Drysdale
Saturday 31st March – East Point @ Drysdale

The PRE-SEASON TRAINING SCHEDULE – can be found under the ‘News’ tab above.

At last Saturday nights glittering awards dinner it was gun recruit Shaun Wells who took the top award of senior best and fairest. Wellsy bolted from the pack with consecutive best on grounds in his first two appearances for the club and was never headed. The former Demon finished ahead of last years winner Mitch Scott, who just pipped skipper Brent Taylor for second.

In the reserves it was back to back wins for Daniel Tester. Testes has had another great season in the twos and won easily despite missing a few games whilst playing seniors. On the back of this award and with another pre season under his belt we can expect many more senior appearances next year.

Despite a solid win against Barwon Heads away from home the senior team will be watching the finals series this year.

Needing a big win to retain fifth spot the boys got off to a flying start only to concede the lead to the Heads by half time. A big start to the third quarter again made finals look a possibility but the home team again made up ground. Eventually we recorded a solid 31 point win but it was about 3 goals short of the mark required for finals.

Whilst disappointed, we have to accept that the team that made it in ahead of us, Torquay, did beat us comprehensively both times we played them. Coming so close to finals with such a young team has been an outstanding effort, and provides a great base for next year.

We will however be represented in finals by both under 18 teams. The first team have a bye this week due to their top placed finish, whilst the second team take on Torquay at 8am on Saturday at Portarlington.
